In order to better serve the needs of the growing Contra Costa County community, Contra Costa Fire Protection District decided to repurpose their Fire Administration facility to accommodate a new Communications Center. The resulting Communications Center is built to keep pace with the County's public safety demands for decades to come.

In 2025 alone, the Contra Costa Fire Protection District Communications Center dispatchers answered 253,294 calls and dispatched over 133,00 incidents, serving as a critical link between emergency responders and more than 770,000 residents across Contra Costa County. Operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the center is staffed by extensively trained emergency dispatchers who are often the first point of contact during an emergency. Beyond answering 911 calls, dispatchers gather critical information, walk callers through pre-arrival medical and safety instructions, coordinate resource deployment, and support responders from initial dispatch through final resolution.

The renovated facility was designed to strengthen operational reliability, improve coordination, bolster technological infrastructure, and create a space that prioritizes dispatcher wellbeing. The 9,034 sf Communications Building, including a 1,252 sf addition, now houses 16 dispatch consoles, dedicated training and conference space, a dispatch center server room, 11 bunk rooms to support round-the-clock staffing, a fitness center, and decompression room. A 72-hour generator dedicated solely to the communications center ensures dispatch operations continue uninterrupted through extended power outages. New roofing, roof-mounted HVAC, enhanced site security, ADA parking upgrades, and EV parking round out the site improvements. Structural upgrades bring the facility into full compliance with Essential Service Facility requirements, so they remain operational when the county needs it most. A second phase to renovate the Division Office Building is currently under construction.

Together, these improvements give Contra Costa County Fire Protection District a communications center built not just for today's call volume, but for the community’s continued growth.
