COAR partnered with Wright Contracting to rebuild Santa Rosa Fire Station No. 5 through a Design-Build delivery method, replacing the original station that was lost in the 2017 Tubbs Fire. This project represents a critical step in Santa Rosa’s long-term recovery, restoring essential emergency services while strengthening the City’s ability to respond to future disasters.

Relocated to a larger, more strategically positioned site, this single-story station was designed to improve response times and support expanded operations, including upstaffing during severe weather. The station also serves as a forward command post during major emergencies and a place of refuge for the surrounding community in times of crisis.

Resilience guided every aspect of the design. As COAR Principal Jeff Katz noted, “One of the City’s goals was to create a structure that felt substantial.” Fire-resistant materials, simplified forms, and enclosed eaves were incorporated into the design, a direct response to lessons learned from the Tubbs Fire, ensuring the building is better equipped to withstand future wildfire events.

This station includes three apparatus bays, a training area, kitchen, outdoor area, and living accommodations for 6 fire personnel. Designed for a lifespan exceeding 50 years, the Santa Rosa Fire Station No. 5 incorporates resilient, sustainable features and thoughtful infrastructure to meet the evolving needs of the Santa Rosa Fire Department and serve the community for decades to come.
